Lamp Shines Brightly to Win Top Prize - Friday 8th March 2019

A traditional corner pub is again celebrating winning a major award. The Lamp Tavern, in Barford Street, Highgate, has been selected as Pub of the Year by the Birmingham branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale.

Known by many as just The Lamp, the pub has had at its helm for the last 25 years the popular licensee Eddie Fitzpatrick, who always ensures that everyone has a warm welcome. A Birmingham CAMRA spokesperson said that he is part of the overall experience of visiting the pub. “Eddie is known for his sense of humour, but he is also known for making you feel at home, whether it’s your first time in The Lamp or a regular: and his regulars themselves are also very friendly and will make you feel welcome. The Lamp also hosts regular folk music nights and other events. And on top of all this, Eddie knows how to keep a good pint! He usually has at least five different real ales on offer, all served in tip-top condition.”

Birmingham CAMRA chose The Lamp Tavern for the top prize from a short list of ten pubs which had been selected via an online vote. In second place was The Wellington in Bennett’s Hill off New Street, famous for its huge number of hand pumps covering a wide range of beer styles, with third place being the Jeweller’s Arms in Hockley, which likewise has a goodly number of hand pumps offering an extensive range of styles.

The other pubs in the top ten are, alphabetically:
 The Barton’s Arms, Aston
 Burning Soul, Hockley
 Old Moseley Arms, Balsall Heath
The Post Office Vaults, City Centre
 Rock & Roll Brewhouse, Hockley
 The Spotted Dog, Digbeth
 The Woodman, Digbeth
